Upcoming Disney Trip, Backstory, Part 2:

The food is our favorite part!!

We had to wait until 180 days prior to our trip to book our restaurants (I know, its crazy, planning meals 180s day ahead of time!!) At the 180 day mark, I called the dedicated line for Victoria and Albert’s, spoke with a fabulous Cast Member, and we were booked for my 40th birthday dinner on October 3 at 8:30. Given that it’s the day after a huge race I can look forward to two more things: I’ll be super hungry and I’ll fit in what ever dress I choose to wear

We have some favorites in Disney; California Grill and Jiko are probably the top two. So we booked Cali Grill on a night that we’ll be able to view the fireworks in Magic Kingdom, and Jiko for our last night.  The first night, as you know, we planned to arrive from separate destinations at 8:30PM, so there is some question as to whether or not we can make a dinner, even at our hotel restaurant. We took the a chance and booked Flying Fish at 9:45 and just hoped we would make it.

Park tickets are the next thing to tackle, and I planned and plotted and spreadsheeted way to many times! Under normal circumstances I would prefer to have a 10 day park hopper that never expires. I would probably even spring for the plus options (water parks and the like), just in case. But I have a ticket with plus options from like 5 years ago and don’t really need those now, however, Jake doesn’t have one and I think we should go to a water park in October. Because I want to. So here’s the plotting part. Just as I was thinking about this, I got an AmEx offer in the mail for their Blue Sky card.  So, the blue sky thing gives you credits toward travel purchases, not frequent flier miles, actual credit on your statement. And, and this is where the tickets come in, if you spend $500 in the first 60 days of having the card, you get $300 in credits as a bonus. Plus you don’t pay interest on purchases for the first year. So my thought was to buy the Disney tickets for $1000 on the AmEx, get the $300 credit, apply the credit to the plane tickets I’ll be buying later and take a couple of months to pay the tickets off as they won’t be adding interest to that purchase.
So I did it. The tickets were $1043.91

Good Heavens, think of the all the Diet Coke (2000 cans or so) that would buy, or race entries (4 or 5 big ones), or tanks of gas (roughly 35), or square footage of new floor in the kitchen/dining/living room (200, okay, so not much…that explains concrete subfloor as our design choice), or days at Disney World (at least 20).

We have two 10 day park hoppers that never expire, one with plus options, one without (because one of us still has plus options on a ticket…). I was leaning towards no plusses at all and just buying admission for Jake to a waterpark, but then realized that the $50ish more for 10 plusses worked out pretty well even if you only use two of them. And I put in on the new AmEx Blue Sky card, so I got 300 bonus dollars toward travel expenses plus no interest on purchases for 12 months! I think we win all the way around. Except maybe that we have to actually pay $1043.91. But see how I made it sound practical and budget conscious and credit card savvy?

Now we wait….The Food and Wine Festival announcements start early, but don’t become specific until August. I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear that Belgium and South Korea have been added to the tasting booths. Belgium? South Korea? Excellent Food? Damn straight, sister!! I’ve been to both countries, actually doing a fellowship in South Korea two years ago, and I’m pretty sure I’m the only person I ever met who GAINED WEIGHT in Asia. 8 pounds in 3 weeks. And not that bloated cruise ship weight gain, this was real actual pounds. Belgium I shouldn’t even have to explain (waffles, anyone?).

Obviously, we’re hoping for waffles.

And South Korea? Don’t get me started!! Bulgogi please, love love it. Those little sticky rice paste balls filled with honey? Yeah, those had better be there (I think they were the culprit of the weight gain). But my A Number One Top Of The List would have to be Bibimbap. I’ve spent the last two years at home sampling bibimbap, trying to make it myself, wandering Korean grocery stores, and pretty much failing. And then I stumbled into Asahi Sushi in Clinton Township, Michigan. They serve bibimbap in a hot stone bowl with the fried egg and everything. Its perfect. And its less than a mile from my office. (I’ve got a good embarrassing Korea story too, but its unrelated to food–while out running one morning in Seoul, I tripped and fell. One of those epic kinds of falls, where you try to catch yourself for a really long time, but your head is getting closer and closer to the ground and you continue to stumble forward. THen you actually fall, but really you skid across the sidewalk because your momentum carries you. And you are the really tall blonde girl in a country full of South Koreans…).

So, you can see I’m super excited for FWF and these food additions.

Part 3: life altering (and therefore vacation altering) developments…

Upcoming Disney Trip; Backstory, Part 1:

Mickey Mouse made from bath towels, by Mousekeeping at the Animal Kingdom Lodge

Why Disney? Why Now?

1. 40. This is my birthday trip. I’ll be 40. I’ve actually had to get used to it already, because triathlon events categorize athletes by age and to make it simple, your age is considered to be how old you will be on the last day of the year. So since January 1, USATriathlon has considered me a 40 year old. That doesn’t make it better. Anyway, back to 40. A long time ago, when I had no money I decided that on my 40th birthday I would eat at Victoria and Albert’s. Well, its here. And while it’s still expensive, I can now make the splurge and with careful planning not worry about next months bills.

2. USATriathlon Long Course Nationals/Tri Club Nationals are being held on October 2. That’s the weekend I chose to start my birthday trip. I hadn’t planned on going again. See, last year I qualified for World Championships, but opted not to join Team USA and go to Germany because Jake and I had already planned a trip to Italy that conflicted. Really, I didn’t feel bad. Team USA makes you pay to transport your bike, buy the sweatsuit, use the team hotel, etc and its becomes insanely expensive. Not to mention that I qualified by the skin of my teeth and would basically be going to Germany to get my ass handed to me. Flash forward to this winter’s newsletter from USAT. Nationals are at Myrtle Beach. It’s the only qualifier for Worlds. And Worlds? In Las Vegas!! That means if I qualify I can totally go!!! Then I realize that October 2 is the first day of the Disney trip. No worries…here’s the skinny: I fly to SC on Friday AM, rent a car to Myrtle Beach–all my equipment etc will be in a team van already on site, race on Saturday AM, barring really bad bike wrecks, I’ll drive back the airport, fly to MCO at 4PM ish, Mr. J will fly in to MCO that evening as well, we get our car, and into BWV by 8PM. Late dinner at Jiko is likely. See, totally fine. I do feel really bad for whoever gets to sit next to me on the plane though, I won’t have time to shower and I might still be in my race shorts…

3. In case I didn’t mention it, I’ll be turning 40.

Last fall Jake and I went for a free dining weekend and hit the Food and Wine Festival. Being foodies and winos, this was a great weekend!! We upgraded to the deluxe meal plan so we could do all signature restaurants (you pay $25ish more–but with the base plan free, it’s a bargain!) and used the snack credits for the FWF booths. We had dinners at Jiko, Yachtsman, and Citricos. We ate just about everything in Epcot. We drank untold amounts of wine (markup anyone?). We went to some seminars. In short, we had a great time and decided to return to do it again.

We are fortunate to have two Disney Visa’s that are used for personal and business expenses. Jake can often charge 5-8k a month to his visa when working with multiple customers (he works on very expensive heavy equipment and when something needs fixing, he pays for it and bills them…) so our Disney points have really racked up in the last two years, making a return to FWF and dinner at V&As very reasonable.

First task–rent me some Disney Vacation Club points for Boardwalk Villas. After last year’s stay at a value resort we decided that while it was inexpensive, the travel to Epcot would be easier from Boardwalk. By renting points from a DVC timeshare owner we paid only a bit more than a value resort would cost and we would be able to walk (okay, stumble) back to our room after a tour of the world and its wine. and beer. and those really yummy frozen vodka things….

I thought I’d give you a little background on renting points, in case anyone is interested in trying this angle. I’ve never had bad luck with this and have done it many many times. I’ve got three or four people I typically work with, finding all of them on disboards.com. The basics are pretty much the same for each of them, but I will say I like one of my rental providers better than the rest, Mr. D is super nice and helpful! Usually DVCers will rent some points to you for $9-$11 per point, with 50% due at booking and 50% due 30 days out. I’ve paid that way, I’ve paid it all at once. You get a reservation sheet from them first, with a number and use paypal or a check and boom, its done. The down side is that you are pretty much tied to that reservation then. Changing or canceling isn’t going to go smoothly or make anyone happy. So know what you want and know that you can go and know that you will probably lose your money if some tragedy befalls your family and you have to cancel your trip at the last minute. Those are the down sides, oh, and you don’t get the free dining kind of deals either, but I considering you have to buy a package to get the free dining, I still think I make out okay.

The up side is that you get a fancy pants room for a great price! A studio at Boardwalk Sunday-Thursday nights will end up running you about $100-$130 a night and you’ll have a kitchenette (I love that I can bring my leftovers from restaurants home and eat them for lunch the next day—heating them in the microwave, having actual silverware and glassware to use). I’ve stayed in a one bedroom as well, and it is a fair amount more, but you get a full kitchen and washer/dryer. I have very seriously considered joining DVC and almost did last year until I got an unexpected tax bill that ate my deposit. We are still considering it, but the points rental prices haven’t really changed and Jake and I take vacations to other destinations too, so I’m not sure I want to commit yet. I have thought about the idea that my family can benefit (imagine giving a room at Disney as a Christmas gift!!) but I can’t pull the trigger. It’s not really a money saver, it’s a way to get a big girl room on a regular basis for a reasonable price. I’m pretty sure we would end up spending way more money on Disney if we bought, simply because we would have an excuse-the room is paid for, let’s just go for a long weekend…

Knowing that DVCers snap up standard view studios I contacted some folks I’d rented from previously and managed to snag one for four nights. We rented the points upfront in November and it now feels like we never even paid for it! I love planning ahead.

Backstory Part 2: Food (oh, and parks, but mostly food)

Bacco for my Birthday

Okay, its a little early for my big 4-0, but one of my BFFs is heading to Italy for two weeks and wanted to celebrate before I left. I said she could just take me to Italy with her, but it seems they are doing a vow renewal and, frankly, I wasn’t welcome. They will be in Positano though…probably not to swim from boats for wine…

Anyway, after a full day of rewarding work improving the education system of Michigan…hmmm, no, after a full day beating our heads against the wall that is the education system in Michigan we headed to Bacco for dinner. Its been cooler lately, but last night was pleasant and we picked a sunny table on the patio and for the first time in what felt like weeks talked about stuff that wasn’t work related.

I’d expressed to Amy earlier that she needed to have fresh figs and prosciutto while in Positano, that we were so obsessed with figs when we came home two years ago we ate them constantly. In fact, I just a recipe (like you need recipes for sandwiches) Prosciutto, Fig and Manchego Sandwich

Prosciutto, Fresh Fig, and Manchego Sandwiches

mmmm, figs and prosciutto,mmmm

Anyway, as soon as I saw the Fig, Ricotta and Honey appetizer I insisted we order it. Bacco was nice enough to split it for us (nice true Italian touch) and it was everything I had hoped. Sweet but not too sweet, with the creaminess of the cheese and some crunch in the pine nuts. I loved it. Amy didn’t finish hers, but she at 3/4 of it, so I assume she wasn’t pretending to like it.

Fresh Figs and Ricotta with Honey, Bacco

Imagining I was in Italy again I got all excited about multiple courses. Someday I’ll learn. For my salad I ordered the Insalate Carciofi–a perfect cylinder of artichokes, cous cous, fresh tomatoes, and avocado. I should have stopped here, but I ate it all, plus the bread, and the pureed white bean dip that came with it. As if they were never brining food to me again.

Insalate Carciofi, Bacco

OF course, I failed to take pictures of the last two courses. It wouldn’t be a meal if I didn’t get so excited about eating that I forgot my job. For dinner I had quail with a bean and mushroom ragu that completely nailed the flavors–the earthy bean and mushroom with the fresh tomatoes was well done and the quail was moist with nicely done skin. Since it was my birthday I also got dessert. I know, a total shock. Banana and Chocolate Cake. Sooooo good!! Carmelized bananas on the side with a vanilla and caramel sauce, and a layered cake of what was very similar to banana bread (but more cake like) with chocolate ganache and vanilla fillings topped with fresh whipped cream.

You would love a picture!! It was gone before I even thought about it.

We’re back, online I mean!

The move from one Michigan place to another Michigan place left us lacking in internet connections for a while. In that time you’ve not missed a thing! We didn’t travel, or eat out other than fast food.

The biggest excursion was actually yesterday, to Hell, Michigan. Yes, we have a town named Hell; it has a post office, an ice cream store and a make shift chapel for those who would like to say they married in Hell. I go there once a year for Dances With Dirt, a relay race through mud, rivers, fields, Hell, horse trails, and trees. 250 5 person teams compete for 100 kilometers, get completely filthy (seriously, at least two legs of this race involve traversing mud pits that are chest deep), scraped and bruised, tired and sometimes drunk. Yesterday was no exception!

This event it one of my favorite races, not because I love this kind of running (I don’t) but because I love the people. I’ve raced this for the last 8 years with four guys I love to see and 5-6 other teams of folks we know. For many of us this is the only time we see each other face to face all year so it becomes a full weekend of making dinner reservations for 40 people and overtaking the Chelsea Comfort Inn.

I miss them all already. Til next year!!
